The Founding of Outward Bound

Outward Bound was founded in 1941 in the tumultuous waters of the North Sea during World War II, to provide young sailors with the experiences and skills necessary to survive at sea.

Originally named for the nautical term for a ship's departure from the certainties of the harbor, the term 'Outward Bound' has been adopted and evovled to represent a global institution whos ethos and purpose is to help people discover themselves, learn to care for themselves and in so doing, empower them to care for those around them.

Outward Bound remains the largest and most established non-profit-making organisation in the world specializing in outdoor experiential education with more than 50 training centres in over 30 countries.More than 250,000 aspiring people attended courses at these traning centers in 2008.

“I regard it as the foremost task of education to ensure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial, and above all, compassion." - Kurt Hahn co-founder of Outward Bound.

Outward Bound Hong Kong

In the 1960’s, it was noted that Hong Kong had a fine educational system for academic work but lacked a significant means of educating the non-academic. In short, it lacked a well-rounded educational development.

Outward Bound Hong Kong was founded in 1970 and began as a way of fostering initiative, acceptance of responsibility, self-assurance and confidence. OBHK was seen as a short term and intensive character training organisation for youth who were at transitional periods in their life (leaving school or university).

Today we remain relevant to the needs of a modern international city like Hong Kong. Key elements of success in modern companies include leadership, communication, integrity, team work and the like. Outward Bound Hong Kong remains at the forefront of outdoor experiental education in Asia, setting the benchmark and producing the leaders of tomorrow.
